Why Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) is no longer a viable security option

  • by

Many years ago when MSE was first released by Microsoft it was actually a really nice and easy to use Free Antivirus. However, in recent years Microsoft wanted to make it “easier” to use and decided that instead of allowing MSE to update automatically whenever it needed to. They now have it where it only updates through the Windows update service on your computer system. This means that unless you are constantly checking for Windows updates, you are not getting the most up-to-date virus protection definitions. Or at least that’s what you would think, Microsoft doesn’t release definitions as they become available, instead they release a bundle of definitions with their next push of updates. Meaning it could be a week or more before your MSE definitions become up-to-date, and even then they are already going to be out of date in the next 24 hours. This is not to say that MSE is bad, just not as good as other options out there. However, we at Frankenstein still recommend almost any other free or paid antivirus over MSE. If you would like our recommendations we are more than happy to suggest a few and we can even install and configure them for you. We hope you keep us in mind for all your computer needs, we are YOUR local Austin IT Support and Service company.
